Product Details

Send your students on an adventure through the carbon cycle! As they follow a single carbon atom throughout the cycle, students will gain insight into the ongoing process occurring around them.

A simple roll of a specially designed colored die at each “carbon cycle station” determines the next step in the process: diffusing into water, being absorbed for photosynthesis or remaining in place. As they move from station to station, student awareness of the various mechanisms contributing to carbon’s movement increases. After traveling through the carbon cycle, students compare and contrast their experiences and conclude that no two adventures are alike! Kit includes complete instructions with reproducible student worksheets, detailed background information and valuable teacher notes. Materials are completely reusable for years of adventure!

Complete for 30 students working individually.

Performance Expectations

MS-LS2-3: Develop a model to describe the cycling of matter and flow of energy among living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem.
MS-LS1-6: Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for the role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms.
MS-ESS2-1: Develop a model to describe the cycling of Earth’s materials and the flow of energy that drives this process.
HS-LS2-3: Construct and revise an explanation based on evidence for the cycling of matter and flow of energy in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
HS-LS2-5: Develop a model to illustrate the role of photosynthesis and cellular respiration in the cycling of carbon among the biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere.
HS-ESS2-6: Develop a quantitative model to describe the cycling of carbon among the hydrosphere, atmosphere, geosphere, and biosphere.
HS-ESS3-6: Use a computational representation to illustrate the relationships among Earth systems and how those relationships are being modified due to human activity.
