Product Details

Add this spectacular demonstration to your arsenal of teaching tricks for teaching electrostatics. These “magic wands” behave differently when brought near the dome of a Van de Graaff generator. The metalized ball, when first brought near the dome, is attracted by induction until it touches. It is immediately charged to the full dome potential and repelled. The ball then “floats” at a distance from the dome. The silver snake is also attracted by induction, but as soon as it touches the dome, it too is repelled. The ball retains its charge, causing the floating behavior. The “snake” ribbon does not retain its charge and repeatedly strikes back at the dome.
