Students will investigate and experiment with these real-world gear machines, and actively gain an understanding of the properties and functions of gears. Study three types of gear configurations-the spur gear, chain and sprocket gear, and crown gear. As students examine the different gear systems, they will learn the applications of gearing up or gearing down, gear ratios, and the mechanical advantages of gears.
