Product Details

Why do roots grow down and stems grow up? Can plants be fooled into different growth patterns? In this series of laboratory experiments, students grow plants in unique ways, observe patterns of plant root and stem growth and answer questions about plant tropisms. Corn and radishes are used as experimental organisms to study gravitropism and phototropism. Students will see surprising results when both light and gravity are “pulling” on the plants. Materials include Petri dishes, corn seeds, radish seeds, modeling clay, pots, potting soil, watering trays, filter paper and complete laboratory instructions.

Complete for 30 students working in pairs to conduct two complete plant tropism experiments.

MS-LS1-4. Use argument based on empirical evidence and scientific reasoning to support an explanation for how characteristic animal behaviors and specialized plant structures affect the probability of successful reproduction of animals and plants respectively
MS-LS1-5. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how environmental and genetic factors influence the growth of organisms.
