Here it is—the easiest and most inexpensive way to determine the caloric content in solid foods. For instance, to determine the number of calories in a peanut, simply suspend a flask containing 50 mL of water in the calorimeter, place a peanut of known mass beneath the flask, and ignite it with a match or lighter. The released energy from the burning peanut heats the water in the flask. Once the flame burns out, students measure the increase in water temperature and the decrease in mass of the peanut to calculate the caloric content of the peanut. Multiple trials can be performed in just one class period. Kit includes calorimeter chamber, flask and detailed laboratory instructions.

Note: Solid food items like peanuts or cracker pieces are needed.
