Fluctuating fuel prices make green energy more appealing than ever! Integrate STEM design standards into your curriculum as students study the principles behind using wind energy to produce mechanical power. Each student group constructs a windmill with two interchangeable fans of three and four blades, respectively. Expose each windmill to a portable fan to measure the time required for the torque of the windmill shaft to lift a weight a given distance. From these data, students are able to determine the power produced from the two different blade designs and calculate which is more efficient.

Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Small portable fans are required but not included. Fans may be shared among student groups. Includes Flinn Exclusive STEM Integration Guide.
