Hand-Operated Vacuum Pump

Introduction

The hand-operated vacuum pump is used to remove air from, or apply a vacuum (up to 25 inches Hg) to, a sealed container or vessel. Alternatively, the hand-operated vacuum pump may be used in filtrations and to transfer and siphon liquids.

Safety Precautions

Do not use this pump to remove air from containers or vessels not approved for vacuum application because implosion leading to serious injury may occur. Avoid drawing liquids into the pump, exposure to volatile acid or liquid vapors and immersion in liquids or solids for cleaning purposes because such actions may cause eventual malfunction. To prevent breakage do not forcibly squeeze handles together once a sufficient vacuum is achieved.

Procedure

1. Connect the pump’s vacuum inlet (the screw-like cylinder located below the pressure gauge) to a vacuum-suitable container with plastic tubing.
2. Squeeze and release the vice-like handles until desired pressure is displayed on the pressure gauge.
3. Release the vacuum by pressing the release valve located below the vacuum inlet.

Liquid Transfer

1. Immerse free end of plastic tubing in the liquid to be transferred.
2. Squeeze and release the vice-like handles to draw liquid into the tubing.
3. Empty the liquid into a container or vessel by pressing the release valve located below the vacuum inlet.
